“What was that fish?” is a common question heard after a dive. To be the scuba diver with the answers, instead of the one asking the questions, take the Fish Identification Specialty course.
To participate, a student must be a PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver who is at least 10 years old.
Academic
When learning to recognize the types of fish divers see, it is easier to reference the exact species after a scuba dive. For example, a butterfly fish in the Caribbean has a similar shape to a butterfly fish in Southeast Asia, but colors and markings may be wildly different.
By knowing the fish family to which it belongs, divers can more easily look up the local name, or at least be able to intelligently ask the local scuba instructor about the the fish that was seen. During two scuba dives, students will learn:
How to identify characteristics of local fish families and species
Equipment
Beyond using, students will need a slate to record what is seen and a fish identification card.

Students may be able to get college credit for this PADI Specialty course. Ask the instructor. The first dive of this PADI Specialty course may credit as an Adventure Dive toward Advanced Open Water Diver certification. Ask the instructor about earning credit.
